The is he/isn't he Chris Bruton episode was a big downer for me. Replacing a point + half a game player was never going to be easy True, but as we were going to four lines, presumably using the cash saved by selecting a less experienced coach, we should've been able to spread the scoring around.

The season was done before it started with poor recruitment. When you have a shoddy defence and a shoddy D-coach running the D and then re-sign most of it then you should not be surprised when the D turns out to be as useful as a condom machine in the Vatican. I totally agree that the D has been a big issue this season, but I can't understand why. We switched Valabik (who played most in the AHL) and Quesnele (mostly in the CIS) with Cantin (AHL) and Boutin (ECHL), so to my mind we were at around the same level. Throw in Godfrey being fully fit this season and we should've been up. I can only think it's down to the coaching/system, which is probably backed up by the fact we've made no personnel changes (or even a line change...) at the back.

Isn't Peasey in charge of D?

Isn't Peasey in charge of D? Yep. And the D has been bobbins ever since he got involved with it back when Thommo was still here. My big wish next season is that we sign four big nasty sods at the back who will level ANYTHING that crosses our blue line. I am so fed up of opposition teams waltzing into our zone and doing whatever they want with no fear of contact etc. I am sick of people being allowed to plant themselves in front of Stewy with little effort made to shift them. I'm bored of all the talk of transition and bigging up D-men on how offensive they are and how much they contribute when they don't do their primary bloody job of stopping the opposition scoring for fun against us. So my wish list would be: 1) Pease out. Clueless, useless, inept has to be removed from any position influencing anything on-ice on game night. 2) Going on past Blaze D-men a foursome along the lines of Schueller, Lee, Robinson and Egener would do me. No-nonsense, hit like trains and I feel would give opposition forwards plenty of food for thought. Yes they would probably be penalised to kingdom come by our refs who confuse a hit with hooking but hey, that's how frustrated I am with our poor D.

It's hard enough being a Blaze fan this season, it must be a friggin nightmare being a Villa fan as well Has Peasey really been the defensive coach the whole time? We've had five head coaches and they've all happily let him run their defence?? Either he's a lot better than we realise, none of the five have had the backbone to tell him how to run it or we're mistaken about his responsibilities (and I can only see the last one being an option). Totally agree about the make-up of the defence needing to be more physical next season. We should play to the strengths of our rink, especially now we've got good fan numbers. It should be a fortress like the BBT was for Cardiff - even when they had a bad team no-one wanted to visit. Am I right in saying that Jim Jorgensen has a year left on his deal? He was our best +/- this season and I'm happy if he's back. I'd expect Clements to be retained too, but I'd like at least three of the other four replacing (I'd probably keep Noble). That said, I think we could keep all six and dramatically improve with better coaching. On paper, Boutin, Godfrey and Cantin should have played with an edge, but they didn't.

Must admit I like the D pairings to be one stay at home physical crease clearing type and one able to provide transition to balance things out. Both should be able to make a good first pass. Think Nasreddine (Transition) and Simonton (The hitter) or Martin and Belak or indeed Schutte if paired with Eggy.
It is possible to get transitional physical D men, trouble is they cost more money!
